A Slice of Village Life: Our Trip to Rangoli Gardens

Our ILM students had the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of rural India during their recent visit to Rangoli Gardens.

Exploring Culture the Montessori Way:

Upon arriving at the beautifully maintained park, the students were welcomed by a scene reminiscent of an Indian village. The meticulously crafted sculptures showcased everyday life in rural India, introducing the children to customs and traditions that enrich our heritage. Rangoli Gardens, known for its vibrant representation of village life, provided an educational and engaging experience that aligned with the Montessori way of experiential learning.

Hands-On Learning: Village Life in Focus

At Rangoli Gardens, the children were immersed in a vibrant portrayal of rural India through life-sized sculptures and detailed village scenes. They marveled at artisans at work, women in colorful saris, playful children, cattle in their pens, and farmers tending to their fields.

These exhibits sparked curiosity, prompting questions like: "Why do they carry water on their heads?" and "How do they grow crops?" This engagement led to meaningful discussions about community living and cultural traditions, embodying the Montessori philosophy of experiential learning.

Observation is a cornerstone of Montessori education, and at Rangoli Gardens, students had the opportunity to explore the sculptures up close. Beyond the life depicted in the sculptures, the children reflected on the colors and authenticity of each display, sharing their thoughts with peers. This process deepened their appreciation for the diversity of Indian culture and highlighted how art preserves our history.

Tanga Ride: Experiencing Tradition Firsthand

The excitement reached a peak when the children were invited to take a tanga ride. A tanga is a traditional horse-drawn carriage that was once a popular mode of transportation in villages across India. For many of the children, this was their first time experiencing such a ride, and they were absolutely thrilled. Giggles and wide-eyed wonder filled the air as the students bounced along in the carriage.

Magic Show: Sparking Imagination

The day continued with an impressive magic show that left the children spellbound. The lively magician, with his playful tricks and fun personality, had everyone at the edge of their seats. The show was more than just entertainment; it sparked a sense of wonder and imagination in the children, reminding us all of the joy of believing in the impossible, even for a few moments.

Bringing Montessori Principles to Life

In the end, it wasn’t just a fun outing, but a day filled with learning, laughter, and a newfound appreciation for the simple joys of rural life. We returned to school with tired but happy faces, bringing with us memories of a day well spent exploring India’s cultural roots.
